EDIT: Wersja angielska wywiadu dostępna w komentarzach.

Interview with Richard Z. Kruspe – RockHard No. 256 (20.08.2008)
(Original article scanned by Richard_Landers, translated by Richard_Landers and Gangxxter)
Richard, where and under which circumstances have you grown up?
Until the seventh year of my life, I used to live in the tiny village Weisen. It used to be a nice childhood with much nature, dogs, cats and a huge family with two siblings. Then, unfortunately, my parents got divorced. My father disappeared overnight and we moved to my new stepfather in Schwerin, but I didn't get on with him at all. The situation between him and me escalated and I often beat loose. Sometimes I slept on park benches or in the basement of a friend and the criminal police ran a searched for me. When I got the chance to get apprenticed elsewhere, I directly seized it and went to Hagenau.
Except a huge army base, there wasn't something interesting at all, so I spent my whole free time with playing the guitar for two years.
When I look back, I have to admit, that my stepfather taught me at least a basic discipline I haven't had before. By now, this is very important for me. Even as a musician, there isn't a necessity to compose each and every day.
Where would you like to live?
At the moment, I live both in Berlin and in New York. I like this duality. New York has its own energy that's powering me. My relationship with Berlin, however, never turned out to be very good. When I came here first, the most people's pessimism totally scared me off. The first answer always was "no". Also it's pretty cold here.
In the meantime it turned positive though - particularly the multiculturall= ity, that's working not only between Germans and Turks, but between a whole bunches of nationalities. I'd most like to live in Cape Town. There are the mountans on the one side and the two oceans one the other. The people are frank and friendly and the sunlight there is beautiful and does well to my mind. I'd really like to spend my sunset years there.
Have you been a geek or a rebel in school?
I think that should be clear: The hell of a rebel!
So you already have come to blows?
Oh yeah! When I was between ten and fourteen years old, I regularly got in situations, where I - well... had the opportunity to enjoy life somatically. When I finally started wrestling, I learned, to channel my aggressions. I practised five times a week and competitions in the weekend. Unfortunately, I was way to offensive and didn't have patience during the fights. I Tyson-like just wanted to win.
Are your parents proud of you?
I think, my real father is very proud of me. My mother always wanted me to turn out as something different, but by now it is okay for her, that I'm a musician. At last, it doesn't care what one is doing, as long as one is successful. Especially for the after-war generation of my parents, material values are most important.
What does money mean to you?
Well, basically, it's just the freedom of doing what you want to do. To me, money means independence. Of course, you quickly get used to a certain luxury and lifestyle. When I earned money with Rammstein the first time, it seemed like heaven of earth for me.
I thougt “I'll never need more!”. Now that I've got my apartmen= ts in Berlin and New York and I'm travelling this much, of course I need some more of it.
How do you define “success”?
Success is not a definite phrase. With Emigrate, I earned a lot of positive reviews, sold a lot of albums and recently the album got released in the USA and Australia as well. So I could call it a success, I think, but compared to Rammstein, who are selling many millions of CDs, Emigrate is just a little nothing.
What was the worst job you ever had?
The worst job was, when I worked as a window washer, because I don't really manage with heights (laughs). Two years long, I worked as a trucker, but after an accident I lost my license.
So, the company I worked for wanted me to become a window washer and climb the television tower of Schwerin - that was impossible! So I just went to them, dropped my ladder and said: "See you later!".
To get by, I created shoes by myself and sold them. Espadrilles and stuff like that.
That's funny, because I'm anything else then technical talented. But I'm inventive, when I have to survive.
Also, I served my apprenticeship as a cook when I was young. That's a very hard job, not only because I had to work unsocial hours, but also because it was very hot in front of the cooker.
Rammstein's pyro shows aren't very cold either...
Oh yeah (laughs)! I think, cooking and music have a lot in common. I always used to cook without recipes. I just take, what is there and create something delicious. Maybe, some of the ingredients don't really match, but things li= ke this are easy to learn and you develop some sort of instinct.
Composing is the same.
What would you have done, if you wouldn't be a musician right now?
Hm, good question. I'd like to produce a band sometime - sort of changing allegiance. I also like to write and I think, screenplay writer would be a nice job for me.
Would you like to act? Is there a role, you would like to play?
There are two characters I really like: "Taxi Driver" and "Léon". Besides, gangster movies are cool. For example "Good Fellas" and "Reservoir Dogs".
Rather maverick or evil guy than superhero?
Exactly. They've got much more potential. After I shot an erotic scene for a videoclip recently, I could imagine a whole movie like this. In the beginning, I was very nervous, but the longer we shot this scene, the more I liked it. But: Erotic, not pornographic!
So you would undress for the “Playgirl”?
Not anymore (laughs). Earlier I wouldn't either have done it, I think. I'm often naked at home, but I'm not an exhibitionist enough to undress for such a magazine.
So you're often naked at home...
Yeah, that's some kind of an East-German attitude, I think. When the doorbell rang in New York and I opened the door without clothes on, because I was in bed with my wife, she was stunned. The obscene East-Germans and the prudish Americans - two worlds clashed (laughs)!
Are you vain?
Unfortunately yes. I would like to be more above that, because vanity is rather a negative attribute, which has something to do with wobbliness and ego. I keep working on myself and luckily I found a bit looser stand with progressing age. Some time you start to accept the physical disintegration.
Theoretically you could avoid this with plastic operations. So how about an appointment at Nip/Tuck?
That’s nothing for me, but I have nothing against plastic surgery. If people are unhappy with their body and an operation could provide them another self confidence and awareness of life, then they should easy do such an operation. However, I see the problem in the danger of getting immoderate and, like tattooing, to build up an exorbitant addiction. After all the body doesn’t follow everything and things like claves implants are really crazy.
By the by crazy: What’s the craziest thing you have ever done?
That must be asking a woman if she wants marry me on the second day after getting to know. She said yes, and the rest is history. (Meanwhile both are divorced again… note from the interviewer)
Keyword woman: Which type do you prefer?
Like nearly everyone I have a certain predatory-pattern too. You need a relationship in order to be mirrored yourself and to develop further. In so far you are looking instinctively for a partner who helps on certain points. In order to have a good relationship you have to keep the balance between passion and friendship – with just one of both the relationship breaks some time.
What do you think about Groupies?
They are simply part of it. This symbiosis between Star and Groupie is like a play. Of course the relation between both has nothing to do with the reality, it’s just an illusion, but you shouldn’t destroy it. Personally Groupies don’t pique me very much, because I like it when I have to fight for a woman. But I like the glamour spread by their attendance.
Do you believe in God or the rebirth? Are you spiritual assessed?
More all the time. I don’t believe in God like the church does, but I am a spiritual guy and I believe in a kind of justice; in that the things you do will fall back on you some time. Karma so to speak. I also have the rather feminine habit to use the astrology in order to understand other people. I use it as a tool for decrypting the character. If you know how the house of someone is built you can much better classify someone’s actions. For clarification: I don’t speak of horoscopes or such humbug. There is much mathematics in astrology and you cannot compare it with that ordinary zodiac sign-balderdash found in any TV magazine.
Could you live without television set?
No! I have a huge video projector in my bedroom in my flat in New York and I love it beyond all to lie in my bed smoking and watching beautiful movies. That’s beside sex the only possibility for me to get away from it all. Please plentiful of both, hahaha!
So reading is not yours?
I have read much in the past, but now I’m mostly too lazy for that. Even in aeroplanes is an own screen and a huge assortment of movies now. That’s just too alluring. Nonetheless I have a good reading tip: “The New York-Trilogy” by Paul Auster.
What’s the most important invention of mankind?
Each century has its big inventions and currently it’s fair and square the Internet. Before it, it was the electricity, it made all the other things possible, like the light bulb, the television set or the E-guitar.
If there was a time machine, in which epoch would you like to travel?
Probably to the sword and blade time, as I always call it. Templar, around the 11. century. I can answer this question so easily because I really like to watch even unadjusted movies playing in this epoch. Somehow I have a big affinity for that and I would like to find out, how things were going in that time.
Do you have a phobia?
Beside the already mentioned fear of heights I also have a snake phobia.
When was the last time you cried?
Now you caught me. That’s a big problem of me, because I simply cannot cry. I think myself that is too bad, because crying is a valve leaving out your sorrow. Maybe for this reason my music is so important for me, it’s virtually my tears canal and helps me to live my emotions.
Pffff :>
